We’re looking for a Managing Director

 

NewTV, a nonprofit community media organization, is looking to fill the newly added position of Managing Director to help lead the organization into the future. The person we are looking for is creative, engaging and a proven leader. They have experience forming community partnerships, finding ways to serve members, community organizations, nonprofits, as well as maintain civil relationships with government and state officials.

 

Who is NewTV

 

NewTV is a non-profit media center that provides quality television programming to the diverse community of Newton, MA. The organization's three channels (Community, Education, and Government) offer a platform for opinions, news, and information not generally available from commercial or public media. NewTV specializes in training and content distribution with a highly experienced staff and a state-of-the-art media facility.

 

The Managing Director Position

 

This is a full-time on-site role for a Managing Director at NewTV, located in Greater Boston. The Managing Director will be responsible for overseeing many aspects of the day-to-day operations of the organization, including managing staff, ensuring quality programming is created and distributed, while maintaining positive community partnerships.

 

Qualifications

  • Management and leadership skills, with experience managing a team
  • Budgeting and financial management of a non-profit
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in the media industry, preferably in community media
  • Knowledge of broadcasting standards and regulations
  • Experience with fundraising and grant writing and entrepreneurial activities
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Communications, Journalism, or related field
  • Passionate about community media and NewTV's mission
  • New media and multi-platform distribution models including Podcasting, Vodcasting, AVOD, SVOD, Fast Channels, Tik Tok, AI, etc.
  • Building partnerships and collaborations across the public and private sectors

 

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities 

 

  • Manages aspects of the daily operations and supervises key department heads
  • Lead and continue to develop an experienced team of project management and project controls professionals
  • Serves as a spokesperson for NewTV with government officials and the general public
  • Directs and expands revenue generation, development, and fundraising initiatives
  • Assists in developing timely and relevant media workshops and webinars
  • Identifies, hires, and supervises staff positions as needed
  • Network and collaborate with community organizations – including business, governmental, nonprofits, and local public and private education institutions
  • Builds, expands, and refines all aspects of communications – from web presence to external relations – with the goal of creating stronger brand identity
  • Reports to the Executive Director and provides written updates on staffing, current work and project timelines, and organizational and financial matters
  • Attends and contributes at all staff meetings
  • Stays informed of trends, issues, events, conferences, and developments within the community media field through professional peer contacts, conference attendance, and relevant federal, state, and local legislation
  • Advocate for organizational needs; represents the organization in a positive manner to stakeholders

 

 

Education and Experience Required

 

  • BA or BS degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent work experience
  • A minimum of five (5) years of management and supervisory experience in the community media or media distribution field, or in related cultural non-profit organizations

 

 

 

 

Knowledge/Skills

 

  • Documented experience that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of community media or media distribution field, or in related cultural non-profit organizations
  • Proven visionary leadership and partnership with Boards of Directors in achieving organizational vision and mission
  • Proven success at pursuing and incorporating new revenue sources through a variety of fundraising, grant writing, and entrepreneurial activities, consistent with the mission of the organization
  • Demonstrated management responsibility within a complex nonprofit organization possessing numerous brands
  • Lead by example and influence, setting a tone of transparency, integrity, and service; demonstrate future-oriented thinking; generate positive energy in the organization; engage authentically and with civility, compassion and a sense of good humor
  • Strong communications skills, including effective public speaking and negotiation skills
  • Strong strategic, organizational, developmental, financial and people skills
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and coordinate active outreach/volunteer programs
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational, communication, negotiation, project management, multi-tasking, and prioritization capabilities
  • Dedication to First Amendment rights and enhancing citizen participation through access to communications media
  • Understanding of Cable Act of 1984 and subsequent versions and how its requirements affect community media
  • Experience developing and maintaining a cohesive annual budget for an organization
  • Technical skill and experience in video production, film making, and editing. While these are tasks best done by staff, the Managing Director should have an understanding to keep up with the pace of the team

 

 

 

 

 

 

Anticipated Employment Starting Date - June 10, 2024

 

This job description should not be construed to imply that these requirements are the exclusive standards for the position.  Managing Director will work collaboratively with the Executive Director and perform any other related duties as may be required to fulfill the job responsibilities while adhering to the mission of the organization.

 

Compensation and Benefits

 

The starting annual salary will range from $ 90,000 to $105,000 depending upon qualifications and experience. A generous benefits package — including, health, dental, retirement, vision care, with paid holidays, vacation and sick leave.
